Chlamydia During Pregnancy

Home | General | Chlamydia During Pregnancy

If you’re facing an unplanned pregnancy and considering abortion, STD testing might not be the first thing on your mind. But it’s an important step. If you’ve been told you have chlamydia—or if you’re unsure—it’s worth knowing how it could affect your body and your options. At Bella Women’s Center, we offer free limited STD testing and treatment as part of our commitment to your reproductive health and well-being.

What Is Chlamydia?

Chlamydia is a common sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by bacteria. It often doesn’t show any symptoms, which is why many people don’t even realize they have it. When symptoms do appear, they might include:

  • Abnormal vaginal discharge
  • Burning during urination
  • Lower abdominal pain

Because it’s so easy to miss, routine STD testing is important—especially during pregnancy.

Why Untreated Chlamydia Matters—Even If You’re Planning an Abortion

Chlamydia often shows no symptoms, which makes it easy to overlook. But if left untreated, it can lead to Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)—a serious infection that affects the uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries.

PID can cause:

  • Chronic pelvic pain

  • Damage to your reproductive organs

  • Increased risk of complications during an abortion procedure

That’s why STD testing matters—especially before scheduling an abortion. Identifying and treating infections like chlamydia helps protect your body and reduces the chance of post-abortion complications.

How Is Chlamydia Treated During Pregnancy?

The good news? Chlamydia can be safely treated with antibiotics during pregnancy. These medications are typically given in a single dose or short course, and they are safe when prescribed by a healthcare provider.

If you test positive, your partner should also be tested and treated to avoid reinfection.

Should I Get Tested?

If you’re pregnant—or think you might be—and are sexually active, getting tested is an important step in protecting your health. Even without symptoms, getting tested ensures you can get treated before any procedure—protecting your body from preventable complications.

Bella Women’s Center provides confidential STD testing for pregnant women at no cost to you. Our compassionate team is here to answer your questions, offer support, and make sure you get the information you need to make confident decisions.

You’re Not Alone—and You Don’t Have to Guess

Navigating an unplanned pregnancy can feel overwhelming on its own. Add in questions about STDs, and it can become even more stressful. But you don’t have to navigate this alone.

At Bella, we’re here to support your whole health—without judgment, pressure, or cost—so you can make informed decisions with clarity and care.
